In New Jersey there are 2 common types of insurance policies - Standard and Basic.
The Basic policy costs significantly less, but provides limited benefits. It DOES provide enough coverage to satisfy New Jersey law. However, you should ask yourself if you have assets you need to protect and/or family responsibilities that would prevent you from choosing the Basic policy.
The Standard policy has several different coverage options, and it gives you the opportunity to buy additional protection. Most consumers in New Jersey purchase a Standard policy.
You can find out more information about the 2 types of policies by visiting the State of New Jersey website.
The SAIP (Special Automobile Insurance Policy) makes limited auto insurance coverage available to drivers who are eligible for Federal Medicaid with hospitalization. Those drivers who qualify can get a medical-coverage only policy for $365 a year.
New Jersey is a state that asks drivers to make a choice about the rights the driver will have to sue if he/she is involved in an auto accident. (This choice is only given to drivers choosing the Standard policy. The Basic policy only includes a Limited Right to Sue.)
The Right To Sue options only apply to lawsuits for "pain and suffering" or losses that are non-economic.
The law requires that drivers be insured. Unfortunately though, there are huge numbers of drivers who are uninsured. If you are ever in an accident with an uninsured driver, you may not be able to collect damages.
You might want to protect yourself against that possibility by adding Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage to your auto policy. Then you could make a claim through your own insurance company if the other driver was uninsured.
There are 2 separate insurance markets in NJ -
the regular (voluntary market) and the residual (assigned risk market.)
If a driver has less than 7 insurance eligibility points accumulated during the preceding 3 years, he/she is eligible to purchase insurance in the voluntary market.
(Those points are not the same as the points on your driver's record with the state.) An example of insurance points is: newly licensed drivers are issued 3 points by insurance companies because the driver is an "inexperienced operator."
A driver with 7 or more insurance eligibility points in a 3 year period may not be considered eligible to buy auto insurance in the voluntary market. He/she may be forced to purchase insurance through the PAIP (Personal Automobile Insurance Plan.) For more information you may check out the NJ state website.
As a result of speeding and getting a ticket, a driver loses PLENTY of time ... the time while pulled over by the police, as well as the time required to pay the fine and/or appear in court. More time may be lost if the driver is ordered by the judge to take a safe driver course.
Without a doubt, though, the biggest cost is usually felt in future insurance rates. The raised costs in insurance premiums for a speeding ticket is often much more than the fine connected with the speeding violation. Some speeding violations can actually result in an insurance company dropping a driver's coverage entirely or perhaps refusing to renew their coverage.
