Required Minimum Minnesota Auto Insurance

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) provides economic loss benefits. If you're injured in an auto accident, this portion of your policy will pay you and members of your household, within the stated limits, for medical expenses, lost wages, and replacement services. Those costs will be paid no matter who is at fault. This is what is known as No Fault coverage.

Minimum $40,000 per person per accident.

Liability coverage covers any claims made to your policy from another driver. This is also the portion of your policy that will cover the damages to another person's automobile, within the stated limits, when an accident is your fault.

Minimum:
$30,000 - injuries to 1 person
$60,000 - injuries to 2 or more people
$10,000 - physical damage to others' property

Underinsured coverage will pay, within stated limits, only for the medical claims of those persons who are covered by your policy. These benefits are paid in addition to your PIP benefits and are used when the other driver is deemed responsible for the accident, but does not have enough liability coverage to cover your medical claims.

Minimum:
$25,000 - injuries to 1 person
$50,000 - injuries to 2 or more people

Uninsured coverage will pay for your medical expenses after you have exhausted all of your PIP benefits and when the other driver is deemed to be responsible for the accident, but is not covered by any insurance.

Minimum:
$25,000 - injuries to 1 person
$50,000 - injuries to 2 or more people

Optional Coverage

Comprehensive coverage covers losses that are NOT the result of a collision. This usually includes theft, fire, falling objects, or an accident involving an animal.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan area had approximately 6,608 car thefts reported in 2015 according to info provided by National Insurance Crime Bureau (nicb.org).

Collision coverage covers damage to your automobile if you are involved in an accident (collision) with another vehicle or object.

Rental Car Coverage

By law in Minnesota, every automobile insurance policy (under the property damage liability portion,) must provide a minimum of $35,000 in coverage, without any deductible, for damage to, and loss of use of, a rental car (which includes pickup trucks and vans under 26,000 pounds).

The state law further notes that when a driver rents a vehicle in Minnesota, a separate notice must be attached to their rental contract that informs the driver of this coverage. The notice must also declare: “purchase of any collision damage waiver or similar insurance affected in this rental contract is not necessary if your policy was issued in Minnesota.”

** Some "NO-FAULT" facts **

(a) No fault coverage applies ONLY to expenses which result from injuries sustained in an accident.

(b) No fault is a Minnesota law that was established to help ease the burden of courts and to help ensure prompt treatment for the victims of auto accidents.

(c) No fault covers medical costs, wage losses, and replacement services like housekeeping and child care. In the event of death, it covers $2,000 of funeral expenses.

(d) No fault is the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage on your policy. Sometimes it is referred to as Basic Economic Loss Benefits.

(e) No fault minimum coverage is $40,000. That amount is available for each person who is injured in an accident; $20,000 is allowed for their medical expenses and $20,000 may be used for non-medical expenses. Coverage may be purchased beyond these minimum amounts.

(f) The average car cost of $1,653 for car insurance in Minneapolis is exactly that. An average of the high and low rates. You don't have to agree to such high prices if you don't want to. Read on and discover new ways to save money on your coverage!

Factors That Determine Rates

(a) Type of automobile -
The style of your vehicle, the likelihood of it being stolen, and the cost of repairing or replacing it will definitely affect your premium. A sporty car raises your rates much more than a 4-door family car does.

(b) Your own driving record -
This factor alone will affect your premium rates more than any other. Any accidents that were your fault and/or any convictions for moving violations within the 3-year period leading up to your application or renewal will tremendously affect your cost.

(c) Vehicle use -
Your premium will be higher if you frequently use your vehicle. If it is only rarely used, then you will definitely pay less than if you drive 40 miles to-and-from work each day.

(d) Your residence zip code -
Generally, highly populated cities have higher auto insurance rates since the extra number of drivers on the roadway increases the probability of a collision. The population of Minneapolis was estimated in 2015 at 410,939 and the average household earnings are $44,478 per year. The number of accidents and claims, as well as the road conditions in your area and the vehicle density are also factors that impact premium rates.

(e) Vehicle Thefts -
In urban settings auto theft may still be a problem. In order to make it less of a problem for you, consider installing a passive anti-theft system on your current vehicle. Your car insurance company may reward you with lower rates. In the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, there were 6,608 auto thefts reported in 2014.

Save Money on Minneapolis Auto Insurance:

(1) Take a safe driver course.

(2) Don't buy a car that thieves often steal.

(3) Keep a good credit history.

(4) Increase your deductibles.

(5) Drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles.

(6) Remove all risky drivers from your policy.

(7) Pay quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.

(8) Buy a car with safety features, (alarm system, steering wheel lock, etc.)

History has proven that drivers who have certain characteristics are much more likely to be involved in an accident. So, those drivers are charged higher rates.

While you can't control your age or gender, you can still take responsibility for your driving record and for the type of automobile you drive.
