The State of North Carolina enacted laws requiring that automobile liability insurance be maintained. The minimum coverage acceptable is $30,000/$60,000/$25,000. That breaks down to $30,000 Bodily Injury coverage for each person, $60,000 total Bodily Injury for all persons injured in an accident, and $25,000 for Property Damage coverage.
As well, North Carolina law requires that all licensed drivers carry Uninsured/Underinsured coverage on their auto insurance policies. You can check the state's Department of Insurance website for specifics.
In addition to the required Liability insurance, there are additional types of coverage you may want to add to your auto policy. Here's a brief list of some of those:
(1) Towing and labor costs -
Each time your covered auto or any non-owned auto is disabled, or the keys are lost or accidentally locked in the car, this coverage pays for towing and/or labor costs.
(2) Rented Vehicles -
Coverage is provided for you or a family member who rents a rental vehicle on a daily basis for less than 22 consecutive days.
(3) Miscellaneous Type Vehicle -
Motorcycles, travel trailers, and golf carts are included in this type of endorsement. This also allows medical payment coverage to be extended to your motorcycle (even though it has less than 4 wheels.)
(a) Where you live -
These factors in your area affect your rates... road conditions, vehicle density, population density, repair rates, number of accidents and claims.
(b) Your driving record -
This factor has the largest impact on your premium rates. At-fault accidents and convictions for moving violations within the 3-year period prior to your application or renewal greatly affect your cost.
(c) Vehicle use -
The more your vehicle is used, the higher your premium will be. If you only use your vehicle occasionally, you will pay less than you would if you drove to work 20 miles every day.
(d) Type of vehicle -
The style of vehicle, likelihood of theft, and cost of repair/replacement will all affect your premium. A sports car will definitely raise your rate more than a family car.
To reward safe drivers by giving them the lowest rates possible, the General Assembly enacted the SDIP (Safe Driver Incentive Plan.) If a driver is convicted of moving violations and/or causing accidents, he/she will be charged higher premiums based on the driving record.
SDIP points are charged for violations such as:
reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus, driving while impaired, following too closely, aggressive driving, and speeding, just to name a few.
A driver who speeds and gets a ticket loses PLENTY!! First of all, he/she loses LOTS of time ... the time while pulled over by the police while receiving the ticket, as well as the time required to pay the fine and/or appear in court. As well, even more time may be lost if the driver is ordered by the judge to take a safe driver course.
But, without a doubt, the biggest cost is usually felt in future insurance premiums. The costs in future insurance premiums for a speeding ticket are MUCH more than the fine connected with the speeding violation. Some speeding tickets can actually result in an insurance company dropping a driver's coverage entirely or refusing to renew the auto coverage.

(1) If you enlist in the military, your policy will cover you even if you are stationed in another state. At renewal time, you may need to purchase insurance in your "stationed" state.
(2) If your child goes away to college, your insurance will cover that child as long as he/she is a permanent resident of your home.
(3) Your policy will cover you for driving in Canada. However, it will NOT cover you for driving in Mexico.
